Plot summary
Mickey Scarpato and his wife Jeanie live in God's Pocket, a working class neighborhood of South Philadelphia. Jeanie's son Leon is killed while working at a construction site, and the men on the job tell the police it was an accident; Jeanie does not accept that account and wants to know what happened to her son. Mickey arranges the funeral with Smilin' Jack Moran and frets about the cost, and he owes Sal Cappi money. Richard Shellburn, a newspaper columnist who drinks, is assigned to write about the death, and the regulars at McKenna's bar welcome him when he comes around asking questions. He calls on Jeanie for his story.
