Plot summary
Joe Gower is a librarian who does his rounds on roller skates. His boss, Neil Pepper, is strict, and his friend Abe Washington is a police officer. A mistake by Joe disrupts Washington's undercover work, so Joe owes him a favor, and Washington collects: a police charity show needs officers to perform in drag, and Washington wants no part of it. Joe auditions hoping to be bad enough to be turned away, but he is cast, and he meets officer Rachel Wareham there. He lets her believe he is a real police officer, and the borrowed identity lands him among real officers and real criminals.
