Plot summary
In 1983 New York, Hector Negron, an elderly veteran, works as a post office clerk. After recognizing a customer, he shoots the man dead with a German Luger pistol. Detectives who search his apartment find the missing head of the Primavera, a carved piece from the Ponte Santa Trinita, and a photograph. A rookie reporter, Tim Boyle, interviews the silent Negron, who begins to speak of Italy in 1944, when he served as a corporal in the segregated 92nd Infantry Division. An attack across the Serchio River leaves him stranded with three other men: Staff Sergeant Aubrey Stamps, Sergeant Bishop Cummings and Private Sam Train. Sam carries a carved head he found in Florence and has rescued an Italian boy named Angelo.

- Miller fought hard to win the role of Sam and then had to prepare physically for it: Spike wanted him for the movie but told him he had to lose weight first, giving him nine weeks in which to lose 60 pounds.
- On 21 June 2011 a Paris court ruled in favour of Lee and On My Own, finding that TF1 had failed to honor the contract, which proved "disastrous" for the film. TF1 was fined 32 million euros, of which 1 million went to Lee and 200,000 to screenwriter James McBride.
- A scene recreating the Sant'Anna di Stazzema massacre was shot where the atrocity took place; over 500 villagers were murdered there by German occupation forces, and the massacre is re-enacted in the film.
- Giovanni Cipollini, deputy head of the National Association of the Italian Partisans, attacked the film as a "false reconstruction" and a "travesty of history".
- Wesley Snipes had originally been cast in the role of Stamps, but he could not commit to the film because of his financial troubles.
- Lee issued a casting call for an Italian child actor, and 5,000 child actors auditioned for the role before Sciabordi was finally cast in it.
- Naomi Campbell had originally been cast as Wilder in September 2007, but she later pulled out of the production because of scheduling conflicts.
