Biography

Joan Crawford was an American actress who started out as a dancer in traveling revues before making her Broadway debut and signing with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1925. She built a following as a flapper in the late 1920s and soon became one of MGM's top stars, often playing determined young women who found romance and success. Her films from this period included Grand Hotel (1932) and The Women (1939). After being labeled box office poison at the end of the 1930s, she staged a comeback with Mildred Pierce (1945), winning the Academy Award for Best Actress. Further Oscar nominations came for Possessed (1947) and Sudden Fear (1952). She later appeared in Johnny Guitar (1954), What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962), Strait-Jacket (1964) and Trog (1970), after which she retired from the screen. She also worked in radio and television and received the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 1970.

  1. First role

    Crawford's first screen work was as a body double for Norma Shearer in Lady of the Night (1925), the studio's most popular female star at the time.

  2. About the name

    Smith organized a contest in Movie Weekly called "Name the Star" so readers could choose her new stage name. "Joan Arden" was the initial choice, but another actress had prior claim to that name, so the alternative surname "Crawford" became the choice.

  3. A role that slipped away

    Crawford wanted the title role in Mildred Pierce, but director Michael Curtiz pushed for Barbara Stanwyck and made Crawford take a screen test before giving her the part.

  4. Early training

    In the 1920s and 1930s, Crawford took singing lessons from Estelle Liebling, who taught Beverly Sills. Liebling was a voice teacher.

  5. Big break

    Crawford's role as Diana Medford in Our Dancing Daughters (1928) made her a star and a symbol of 1920s femininity who rivaled Clara Bow.
