Plot summary
Eva Phillips rules the Georgia mansion she shares with her husband Avery, a mill owner whose face is scarred and who drinks and hates her. Her cousin Jennifer Stewart comes to stay and sees how completely Eva directs the household. Eva also works against the engagement of Avery's sister Carol to Judson Prentiss, Avery's business manager and Eva's former lover. Sue McKinnon, a guest at the house, has been mentally disturbed since Eva took Avery from her. Jennifer begins seeing Sue's brother Ty, and she takes a place as Eva's assistant and as a caretaker for the young Phillips children.
