Plot summary
Diana Medford, known as "Dangerous Diana," seems wild and popular but is actually principled, even scolding her parents to keep early hours. Her friend Ann is the opposite: she chases men for their money and is as loose in her morals as her mother. Both are drawn to Ben Blaine. When Diana flirts with other men, Ben misreads that as indifference, so he marries Ann, who has lied about her virtue.

Scott Fitzgerald to write that Crawford "is doubtless the best example of the flapper," the girl in smart night clubs, "gowned to the apex of sophistication," toying iced glasses with a remote, faintly bitter expression.
