Plot summary
Arthur Trent is preparing a new picture, Mademoiselle Fifi, with two actors cast in the leads. Several directors turn the job down because of the ego of one of them, so Trent tells that actor to direct the picture himself. He is broke, and he needs his co-star to stay with the film, but the co-star has been offered a Broadway show and would rather accept it. Judy Adams, an aspiring actress who waits tables at the studio commissary, gets into the new director's dressing room and talks him into auditioning her. He promises her a part if she can get his co-star to sign a contract with him, so Judy goes to that man with a story that she is the director's secret, pregnant wife.

- Jack Carson coached Doris Day on the set, teaching her to hit precise camera marks without looking for them and to hold close-ups so her face, not the back of her head, stayed in frame; Day wrote that his help with her "technical indoctrination" into movie acting was enormous.
- It's a Great Feeling was Doris Day's third film and the first to bring her widespread notice; it was also her third and last pairing with Jack Carson, following Romance on the High Seas and My Dream Is Yours.
