Plot summary
At the Grand Hotel in Berlin, Baron Felix von Gaigern has run through his money and gets by as a card player who sometimes steals jewels. He becomes friendly with Otto Kringelein, an accountant who is dying and intends to spend his last days in comfort. Kringelein's old boss, General Director Preysing, is staying at the hotel to finish a major deal and hires Flaemmchen, a stenographer who hopes to become an actress. Grusinskaya, a Russian ballerina whose career is on the wane, is another guest. The baron enters her room to take her jewelry.
