Plot summary
Sadie McKee helps her mother, the cook, by serving part-time in the Alderson household, where the lawyer son, Michael Alderson, admires her. Her heart is with Tommy Wallace. During a family dinner, Michael speaks badly of Tommy, and Sadie calls her employers snobs. She goes to New York City with Tommy, who lost his job at the Alderson factory over an accusation of cheating. In New York the two are nearly broke, and Opal, a club performer, befriends them and takes them to her boardinghouse. Sadie goes out to look for work, planning to meet Tommy at the marriage license bureau at noon.
