Plot summary
Eloise Crandall, a tenant at a beach house, falls from the patio to the sand, and the next morning Lynn Markham arrives at the house, which belonged to her late husband. Amy Rawlinson, the real estate agent, shows her the rooms and calls the previous tenant quiet and nice. Drummond Hall, known as Drummy, keeps his boat at the dock, has a key and is at breakfast in her kitchen when she comes in. Next door, Osbert and Queenie Sorenson urge Drummy to make friends with the new owner. Lieutenant Galley of the port police tells Lynn that Mrs. Crandall died in the fall and doubts the talk of suicide. Lynn says she wants to be left alone and intends to sell the house.
