Plot summary
Harriet Craig is manipulative and controlling, and she wants her house, her appearance and her social life to match an ideal she alone sets. Her husband Walter, her cousin Clare and two maids share the home. She is harsh with the staff, one of whom has served the family since Walter was a child. A difficult early life and an unfaithful father left her distrustful of men. She keeps away visitors she dislikes, among them Walter's friend Billy Birkmire, and invites older couples she believes can help his career. Clare grows fond of Wes Miller, Walter's co-worker.
