Plot summary
In New York, young Paul Boray asks for a violin as a birthday present. His mother Esther buys the eight-dollar instrument even though his father Rudy calls it a passing fancy. Paul grows into a gifted violinist. With the family short of money and his father doubting his prospects, he leaves home and joins a locally broadcast orchestra where Sid Jeffers plays piano. At a party he meets the hostess, Helen Wright, whose husband is Victor. She is rude to him, then sends a gold cigarette case with an apology. Her connections bring him a manager, and he falls in love with her. Esther urges him to think about his future and points out that he missed a date with Gina, a fellow musician and his sweetheart.
