Plot summary
Jeff Williams, Mary Clay and Dill Todd grew up together and have stayed friends into adulthood. Jeff has carried a secret for years: he is in love with Mary. He returns from Madrid hoping to ask her to marry him, and learns that she is to become Dill's wife the following day. Nobody but the household's butler has ever guessed how he feels, so Jeff keeps quiet and offers his good wishes. Then Dill fails to appear at the ceremony. The previous evening, he had married Connie Barnes, with whom he had been involved while he was in Europe. Mary emerges from her bridal gown and keeps her composure rather than swooning.
