Plot summary
Fay Cheyney, a widow from America, is bound for England. On the crossing Lord Francis Kelton finds her in his stateroom, and his friend Lord Arthur Dilling takes an interest in her at once. In London she becomes a favorite of English society, and the Duchess of Ebley invites her to spend a weekend at her country home. Arthur's attempts to impress her are refused, though she feels drawn to him. The people who work in Fay's house are not servants but confidence operators planning a jewel robbery with her as their elegant front, and the weekend among the wealthy gives them the opening they want.
