Plot summary
A westbound ship sailing for Apia, Samoa, is held at Pago Pago when cholera is suspected on board. Pago Pago is a village on a Pacific island, and the rain there does not let up. Alfred Davidson, a self-righteous missionary, is traveling with his wife. Sadie Thompson, a prostitute, is stranded with them, and she spends her days drinking and partying with the American Marines quartered on the island. Sergeant Tim O'Hara, whom she calls Handsome, falls in love with her. Her behavior offends the Davidsons, and Mr. Davidson confronts her, insisting that she give up her evil ways. She refuses.
