Plot summary
Jessie Cassidy lives with her family in a Lower East Side apartment and wants a way out of it. She talks her boyfriend, Eddie Miller, into marrying her, and at the wedding reception John L. Hennessey, a self-made shipping tycoon, sends the couple champagne. Eddie tries to impress him, but Hennessey is more taken with Jessie. Eddie moves her into a nice apartment and says she can give up her shopgirl job to dance in a Broadway chorus while he waits for his break. Months pass and she is still in love, though her friend Beryl Lee says Eddie is good-for-nothing. Hennessey holds a party for the show's cast, and Eddie persuades a reluctant Jessie to go.
