Plot summary
Lane Bellamy dances in a carnival and decides she has had enough of that life. She quits and is left stuck in Boldon City, a small Southern town, where she gets involved with a deputy sheriff named Fielding Carlisle, whose career is steered by Sheriff Titus Semple. Semple runs the town's political machine and dislikes Bellamy, so he organizes a campaign against her. Work is hard to find, and an invented morality charge puts her in jail. Meanwhile the machine picks Carlisle as its candidate for state senator, and Semple presses him to marry his longtime girlfriend, Annabelle Weldon, and present the right kind of political family. Carlisle agrees, though without enthusiasm.
