Plot summary
Count Armalia argues in a Trieste casino that luck alone separates aristocrats from waiters. In a dive he tells Rudi Pal that any girl, washed and dressed, could pass for Rudi's fiancée. Rudi leaves, and the Count offers to prove it with the singer Anni Pavlovitch: he will pay for a wardrobe, a hotel stay and a new identity at the Tyrolean resort of Terrano. She is to appear as Anne Vivaldi, daughter of a naval officer who does not exist, and her one condition is a red evening dress. At the resort Giulio, a postman with no ambition, drives her to the hotel. The maid is Maria, an old friend who warns her to be careful. Rudi dines there with the Contessa di Meina, his fiancée Maddelena Monti and her father, Admiral Monti.
