Franchot Tone
Biography
Franchot Tone was an American actor, producer and director who became a leading man of the 1930s and early 1940s, known for gentlemanly sophisticate roles. Born in Niagara Falls, New York, he acted at Cornell before joining the Theatre Guild and then the Group Theatre, and made his film debut in The Wiser Sex (1932). He appeared in Today We Live (1933), Dancing Lady (1933) and Sadie McKee (1934), and his performance as Midshipman Roger Byam in Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, with that film becoming the only one to receive three simultaneous nominations in the category. He later had roles in Phantom Lady (1944) and produced The Man on the Eiffel Tower (1949), playing its lead. He worked extensively in television and returned to Broadway in plays such as Oh, Men! Oh, Women!, while later films included Advise & Consent (1962), In Harm's Way (1965) and Mickey One (1965).

Behind the award
Franchot Tone earned a Best Actor Academy Award nomination for playing Midshipman Roger Byam in Mutiny on the Bounty (1935). Clark Gable and Charles Laughton were nominated too, the only film with three at once, which led to the Best Supporting Actor category.
Behind the camera
In 1957, Tone took on producing and directing duties as well as acting in a version of Chekhov's Uncle Vanya. The filming happened at the same time as an off-Broadway revival.
