Plot summary
Marian Martin lives with her mother in Erie, Pennsylvania, and works in a factory. Al Manning, a fellow factory hand, wants to marry her, but she is set on finding something better. When a train pauses in town, Marian looks through its windows at the wealthy passengers and meets a New Yorker named Wally Stuart, who shares champagne with her and hands her his address. Al tears the paper up, so she reassembles the scraps and leaves for the city. Wally advises her on attracting and keeping rich men, and she takes up with his friend Mark Whitney, a divorced attorney. Mark oversees her transformation. Three years later, she and Mark are in love, and he presents her to his circle as Mrs. Moreland, a wealthy divorcée, to conceal that she is his mistress.
