Plot summary
Torsten Barring hosts a dinner at a tavern whose proprietress, Anna Holm, has a scarred face and leads a blackmail ring. When the manager refuses Torsten credit, Torsten goes to Anna, who forgives the bill and hints that she could be useful to him. He calls on her later; she brings him into the gang and falls in love with him. The gang holds letters that Vera Segert wrote to Eric, and Vera comes to them for help. When Vera's husband, the plastic surgeon Gustaf Segert, comes home unexpectedly, Anna trips and injures her ankle. Intrigued by her scars, he offers to heal her.
