Plot summary
Julie works in a café in a town near the Devil's Island penal colony. André Verne, a prisoner just out of solitary confinement, notices her from the wharf and arranges to slip away from his work gang to visit her room. M'sieu Pig reports him, and Verne is sent back to prison. Julie, banished from the island and without money for passage, turns to Marfeu and ends up held in his shack. In the barracks, a newcomer called Cambreau tells Verne that God lives in every man's heart, and shows a knowledge of people and events that sets him apart. Moll has organized a break from the prison, and Verne means to catch up with the escapees.

- The Catholic Legion of Decency gave Strange Cargo a "condemned" rating, objecting to its "naturalistic concept of religion contrary to the teachings of Christ, irreverent use of Scripture, and lustful complications." The picture was banned in some places, which hurt its box office.
- Strange Cargo was the eighth and final film pairing of Clark Gable and Joan Crawford, and the first Gable film released after Gone with the Wind.
