Plot summary
Bonnie Jordan and her brother Rodney live among Chicago's upper class on the family fortune. The stock market crash wipes it out, and their father dies of a heart attack soon after, leaving the two of them to manage alone. They let the household staff go, sell their belongings, and take jobs to earn a living. Bonnie becomes a cub reporter at a newspaper. Rodney, her naive younger brother, is drawn into a gang that runs beer through the city, and his part in its business grows quickly. The story is based loosely on real crimes that took place in Chicago in that era.
