Plot summary
During World War I, a wealthy American named Richard Bogard buys an English estate in Kent and arrives to take possession. On the day he comes, Diana "Ann" Boyce-Smith and the household learn that her father was killed in action, and she moves to the guest cottage. Bogard is drawn to her. Her brother Ronnie and Lieutenant Claude Hope are British naval officers bound for the war, and Ann believes she loves Claude, agreeing to marry him. Bogard, who had called himself indifferent to the war, joins as a fighter pilot, and Ann confesses her feelings for Bogard to Ronnie, who urges her to tell Claude the truth.

- William Faulkner wrote the screenplay in five days, but MGM vice-president Irving Thalberg insisted Joan Crawford be written into the script because she was contractually owed $500,000 whether she worked or not, beginning the film's many rewrites.
- After rushes showed that the young actors' British accents were completely unconvincing, Howard Hawks cut their scenes entirely and rewrote the film to focus more heavily on Joan Crawford's character, with no better results.
- William Faulkner provided dialogue for Today We Live, making it the only film version of his own work that he co-wrote.
- Today We Live was the only time Joan Crawford and Gary Cooper performed together, despite the two being touted as a classic screen pairing.
- Howard Hawks bought an option on William Faulkner's short story of men in combat as a star vehicle for Phillips Holmes and Charles "Buddy" Rogers, and later for Clark Gable.
