Plot summary
Ethel Whitehead lives in a factory town, married and sharing a home with her parents. She leaves the marriage and the town behind, set on finding a life she considers worthwhile. She has no education and no experience, so she takes a low-wage job until a customer offers her work modeling dresses at his department store. She also takes up escorting wealthy clients. At the club where she entertains them, she finds a place for Martin Blackford, the store's honest accountant, and gradually draws him into a casino gambling scheme run by crime boss George Castleman. Martin resists at first; Ethel argues that only money and power count, and he agrees to please her. They kiss. Ethel also responds to Castleman's romantic advances.
