Plot summary
In Paris in 1940, Michele de la Becque, a career woman, is in love with Robert Cortot, an industrial designer, and they become engaged. Their luxurious life continues as the war nears. After the German occupation, she finds her fiancé socializing with Nazi officers, among them General Schroeder, the German commandant in Paris, and learns that his factories are producing heavy trucks and weapons for the German military. She accuses him, and he offers no denial; people in the streets curse them both. Michele then hides Pat Talbot, an American pilot from Pennsylvania who flies with the Royal Air Force's Eagle Squadron and was brought down over France, and she falls in love with him. She makes contact with the Resistance to arrange his way out of the country.
