Biography

James Gammon was an American actor who often played grizzled good ol' boy characters in film and television. Born in Newman, Illinois, he worked as a cameraman and director at an Orlando television station before heading to Hollywood in his twenties. During the 1970s he helped to establish the Met Theatre in Los Angeles, and a performance there led to his casting in Sam Shepard's Curse of the Starving Class in 1978. He made his only Broadway appearance in a revival of Shepard's Buried Child and was nominated for a Tony Award for it. On screen he was best known as Lou Brown, the manager in Major League (1989) and Major League II (1994), and as Nick Bridges on the crime drama series Nash Bridges. His films included Cool Hand Luke (1967), Urban Cowboy (1980), The Milagro Beanfield War (1988), Wyatt Earp (1994), Cold Mountain (2003) and Appaloosa (2008), and he voiced characters in The Iron Giant (1999).

    Gammon helped found the Met Theatre in Los Angeles in the 1970s, and a representative from The Public Theater spotted him performing there and cast him as Weston in Sam Shepard's Curse of the Starving Class in 1978.
