Charlie Sheen
Biography
Charlie Sheen is an American actor who followed his father, Martin Sheen, into acting. Born in New York City, he broke through in Oliver Stone's Vietnam War drama Platoon (1986), which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. After supporting work in Red Dawn (1984), he starred as the young stockbroker Bud Fox in Wall Street (1987), appeared in the baseball films Eight Men Out (1988) and Major League (1989), and led the comedy spoof Hot Shots! (1991). He moved to television in 2000, replacing Michael J. Fox on Spin City, a part that brought him a Golden Globe, then played Charlie Harper on Two and a Half Men from 2003 to 2011, earning four Emmy nominations. Later credits include a cameo as himself in Being John Malkovich (1999), Anger Management from 2012 to 2014, and Machete Kills (2013). In 1994 he received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Getting ready for a role
Sheen and the rest of the cast of Platoon, the Vietnam War drama directed by Oliver Stone, went through a military-style boot camp that lasted about 30 days. Food and water were strictly controlled, sleep was minimal, and blank-fire exercises simulated combat stress.
Getting ready for a role
For his brief scene as a juvenile delinquent in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Sheen deliberately deprived himself of sleep to get a more authentic look.
A role that slipped away
Woody Harrelson was cast in both White Men Can't Jump, a sports comedy, and Indecent Proposal, a drama, after Sheen declined those parts.
A role that slipped away
Sheen passed on Bull Durham to make the baseball comedy Major League, in which he played Ricky "Wild Thing" Vaughn, a character he reprised in the 1994 sequel.
First role
Charlie Sheen's first sitcom role came as a guest star during Friends' second season. He was so nervous acting before a live audience that the filming stopped.
