Plot summary
Albany, New York, Halloween, 1938. Francis Phelan, once a major league pitcher, has lived as a vagrant since he left his family after his infant son died. He comes back to his birth city and seeks out Helen Archer, a former radio singer who is his drinking companion and is in poor health. They meet at a mission run by Reverend Chester and at Oscar Reo's gin mill. Francis takes menial jobs to support Helen while memories of men he knew who died years earlier return to him, and he digs graves in the cemetery.
