Bob Uecker

Biography

Bob Uecker was an American baseball catcher and broadcaster known for his self-deprecating humor and his long run as the Milwaukee Brewers' radio voice. Born and raised in Milwaukee, he began his professional career with the Milwaukee Braves in 1956 and reached the majors in 1962. As a backup catcher through 1967, he played for the Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, and Philadelphia Phillies and was part of the Cardinals' 1964 World Series champions. After retiring he moved to broadcasting, joining the Brewers in 1971. His wit made him a frequent guest on The Tonight Show, and he hosted sports blooper programs. On screen he played George Owens on Mr. Belvedere and Harry Doyle in Major League (1989) and its two sequels, with a cameo as himself in Fatal Instinct (1993). The National Baseball Hall of Fame honored him with the 2003 Ford C. Frick Award.
