Plot summary
After winning their division and losing the American League Championship Series to the Chicago White Sox, the Cleveland Indians return with changed attitudes. Rick "Wild Thing" Vaughn is a media sensation more concerned with his public image than his pitching. Pedro Cerrano has become a Buddhist and adopted a carefree style. Willie Mays Hayes has turned Hollywood actor and now fancies himself a power hitter. Jake Taylor, the aging catcher and team leader, is dealing with knee injuries. Rachel Phelps sells the team to retired player Roger Dorn, who signs the arrogant Oakland catcher Jack Parkman, putting Jake's old position in doubt. Minor-league catcher Rube Baker also reaches camp despite his trouble throwing the ball back to the pitcher.

- When pitcher Hideo Nomo signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers he chose uniform number 16 in tribute to Taka Tanaka, the character played by Takaaki Ishibashi in Major League II, who wore the same number. Ishibashi had publicly supported Nomo when many figures in Japanese baseball were skeptical of his move.
