Tom Berenger
Biography
Tom Berenger is an American actor who studied journalism before deciding on an acting career and adopted his professional name because the Actors' Equity Association already listed a Tom Moore. He worked in regional theater and soap operas, and his early film roles included Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977) and Butch and Sundance: The Early Days (1979), in which he played Butch Cassidy. During the 1980s he appeared in The Big Chill and Eddie and the Cruisers, both from 1983, Someone to Watch Over Me (1987) and Major League (1989). For Platoon (1986), in which he played Staff Sergeant Bob Barnes, he received an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe Award, and he became well known as Thomas Beckett in Sniper and its sequels. Later credits include Gettysburg (1993), Training Day (2001) and Inception (2010); he won a Primetime Emmy for Hatfields & McCoys.

About the name
Berenger chose his professional surname because a Tom Moore was already registered with the Actors' Equity Association, forcing him to change his name.
Big break
Berenger played Butch Cassidy in the 1979 prequel Butch and Sundance: The Early Days, a part he landed partly because he resembled Paul Newman, who had originated the character.
A change of course
Berenger worked as a flight attendant for Eastern Airlines, based in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1972, before transferring to New York in 1973.
Behind the camera
In 1988, Berenger set up the Tom Berenger Acting Scholarship Fund, which gives awards to theater students for excellence in performance.

Berenger began producing in the 1990s and co-produced the 1997 miniseries Rough Riders, in which he also starred as Theodore Roosevelt.
