Plot summary
John James, a novelist whose marriage has ended, moves with his two children, teenage Louisa and young Sam, to a house in rural South Carolina. The place is known locally for the disappearance of a woman named Sarah Wayne. On the first night Louisa hears noises outside, and a creature lurks on the roof without her seeing it. Sam and Louisa find a large mound on the land, and Louisa returns there after school, where she hears growls. She sleepwalks, comes home muddy, and John finds her in the tub, washing and bleeding. At breakfast she wears makeup and a short black dress. Cassandra, a teacher, offers John her friendship, and puts the changes down to the move and Louisa's age.
