Plot summary
Wyoming, 1892. Monte Walsh is an aging cowboy at the end of the Wild West era. He and his friend Chet Rollins take whatever ranch work comes their way, hiring on at Cal Brennan's ranch, where they meet other hands including their old friend Shorty Austin. Monte keeps a long-standing understanding with Martine Bernard, a saloon girl who is ill with tuberculosis, while Chet has fallen for Mary Wilder, a widow who runs the hardware store. Barbed wire and the railways keep cutting the need for cowboys, so the two men find their options narrowing, though the freedom of the open prairie is what they want.

- This version is a remake of the 1970 theatrical film Monte Walsh starring Lee Marvin, and its script is nearly word-for-word identical, with a lot of the same set-ups and shots.
