Plot summary

While filming a campaign ad at Arapahoe Lake, Richard "Dicky" Pilager hooks a corpse. Dicky, the dim-witted son of a powerful Colorado senator, is running for governor after an unsuccessful mining venture, and Chuck Raven, a lifelong friend of the family who manages the campaign, hires Danny O'Brien to look into the death. O'Brien, a former reporter fired over a false story, now works as a private investigator, and the assignment has him pressuring the candidate's opponents, among them the radio commentator Cliff Castleton. Nora Allardyce, O'Brien's ex-wife, reports for the Mountain Monitor, and Wes Benteen, a family friend, funds half the campaign.
