Luke Askew
Biography
Luke Askew was an American actor and musician who was best known for appearing in Westerns. Born in Macon, Georgia, he studied at the University of Georgia and at Mercer University's law school before starting out in Off-Broadway plays. His film debut came in Hurry Sundown (1967), and he gained notice the same year in Cool Hand Luke (1967). He then worked with John Wayne on The Green Berets (1968). In Easy Rider (1969), his hitchhiker, credited as Stranger on Highway, became a widely recognized part and raised his profile. He later took his first starring role in the Spaghetti Western Night of the Serpent, which became a cult film, and he appeared mostly in supporting or villain parts in genre movies such as The Warrior and the Sorceress and Dune Warriors (1991). He also had guest roles on many television series and performed as a rock and blues singer at the Gaslight Cafe. He died in 2012.
