Plot summary
Milagro is a small town in New Mexico where water is scarce. Ladd Devine, a real estate mogul, buys up land and water rights for a vacation resort that could be the largest in the state. Joe Mondragon wants work at the construction site but is turned away. He tells Amarante, an elder neighbor, that he worries about the drought. His people have lost the water rights to their ancestral lands. He kicks the tap on the irrigation pipe, water seeps into his bare field, and he spends his last ten dollars on pinto beans to plant.
