Plot summary
Lyle Wheeler, a drifter who models himself on the outlaws of the Wild West, comes to a small New Mexico town and meets Bobbie Jo Baker, who works as a carhop and sings. She falls for his free-spirited manner and leaves her job and her bickering, alcoholic mother behind to travel the Southwest with him, hoping for excitement and a better future. Her best friend Essie Beaumont comes along. Lyle draws Bobbie Jo into a life of crime that starts with small thefts, and as those grow more dangerous, Bobbie Jo's older sister Pearl and Pearl's boyfriend Slick join them, forming a makeshift gang that robs to pay for its roaming life.
