Tom Aldredge

Biography

Tom Aldredge was an American actor whose work on Broadway, television, and film spanned roughly five decades. Born in Dayton, Ohio, he was studying pre-law at the University of Dayton when a 1947 performance of A Streetcar Named Desire persuaded him to become an actor. He made his Broadway debut in 1959 as Danny in The Nervous Set, and his stage career brought five Tony Award nominations. He won a Drama Desk Award in 1972 for Sticks and Bones, created the Narrator and Mysterious Man in Into the Woods, and repeated that part in a PBS American Playhouse production and a 1997 concert. On television he won a Daytime Emmy for playing Shakespeare in Henry Winkler Meets William Shakespeare and was known as Hugh De Angelis on The Sopranos. His film appearances included the blind man in Cold Mountain (2003) and Herb Myerson in Intolerable Cruelty (2003).

Aldredge was part of the initial improvisational cast of The Premise, an Off-Broadway coffee house theater founded by Theodore Flicker in 1960, along with Joan Darling, George Segal and Dolores Welber.
