Biography

Margaret Whitton was an American actress whose work took in stage, film, and television. Born at Fort Meade, Maryland, in 1949, she spent early years in Japan before her family settled in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where she took up acting in high school. Her first New York stage role came Off-Broadway in 1973 in Baby Goya, and by 1982 she had reached Broadway in Steaming. Most of her film work fell between 1986 and 1993: she played Vera Prescott, a socialite, in The Secret of My Success (1987), and Rachel Phelps, a baseball club owner, in Major League (1989) and in Major League II (1994). She appeared in The Best of Times (1986), Nine 1/2 Weeks (1986) and The Man Without a Face (1993). On television she worked on soap operas including One Life to Live and The Doctors, and headlined the sitcom Good & Evil. She returned to Broadway in And the Apple Doesn't Fall... (1995).
