Plot summary
In Tacoma, Washington, Joey and Rosalie Boca run a pizza parlor and own an apartment building that Joey manages. In the confession booth he admits to cheating on Rosalie with several women in recent weeks and asks forgiveness without changing his ways. Rosalie believes his evenings out are the rest he has earned. Devo Nod, a young man who works at the parlor, is in love with Rosalie and tries to convince her that Joey is unfaithful and that she deserves better. Her Yugoslavian mother, Nadja, dislikes Joey and the way he expects Rosalie to cook, clean and serve him after her shifts. At the library Rosalie sees Joey kissing another woman. Her grief turns to anger, and she asks her mother to help her kill him.

- The real case behind the film ran through 1982 and 1983, when a woman tried five times to have her husband killed. The last attempt left him shot in the head and chest, and while he lay wounded in their bed for five days she tried to poison him with chicken soup laced with barbiturates.
- The screenplay is loosely based on an attempted murder in 1983 in Allentown, Pennsylvania, where a woman repeatedly tried to kill her husband. She spent four years in prison for attempted murder and was released in 1988, and as of 2023 the couple are still married.
- After surviving the attempts, the husband sold the family business and took a loan on the family house to bail his wife out of jail. She pleaded guilty to two felony charges, he pleaded to the judge for leniency, and she was sentenced to four years.
- The husband described the finished film as '99 percent' accurate, though he listed some inaccuracies: the sleeping pills went into chicken soup rather than spaghetti, his mother-in-law was not involved in the plot, and he did not pay bail for the accomplices.
