Plot summary
Evie Teale and her husband Jacob settle a homestead in Indian Territory with their children, Laban and Ruthie, and plan to raise cattle. Jacob rides out to buy the cattle, promising to be gone a month. A stagecoach line runs past the farm, and Evie takes work feeding its passengers. One traveler warns her about Conn Conagher, calling him a fierce gunfighter. Conagher's partner Mahler rides in with him for a meal. When the homestead comes under attack, the stagecoach arrives during the fighting, and its drivers and passengers help hold the place. Conagher drifts on and takes work with the rancher Seaborn Tay, whose cattle the Ladder Five gang keeps raiding.
