Plot summary
Iberia Parish detective Dave Robicheaux works the death of a young woman, and he suspects a link to New Orleans mobster Julie "Baby Feet" Balboni, who is connected to a Civil War film being shot nearby. On the road Dave stops the film's star, Elrod Sykes, for erratic driving, and Elrod, facing jail, tells him of a decayed corpse that he and his girlfriend Kelly Drummond found in the swamp. Dave goes to the site, and the remains recall a killing he watched as a teenager, when a chained man was shot in the swamp and sank into the bog. The case touches other recent deaths in the parish, mostly of young runaways and prostitutes.
