Plot summary

Pete Calder and Big Boy Matson grow up as best friends in the Hi-Lo country of New Mexico, and both volunteer when World War II breaks out. Pete comes home first and declines work with the cattle baron Jim Ed Love, who now employs much of the town. He begins seeing Josepha O'Neil and also falls for Mona Birk, the wife of Jim Ed's foreman Les Birk. When Big Boy returns, expecting his old life back, he finds Jim Ed's reach everywhere. With the old-time rancher Hoover Young, Big Boy and Pete set out to raise cattle as cowboys once did, and Big Boy turns down Jim Ed's offers to buy him out. Big Boy then starts an affair with Mona.
