Plot summary
Howard Spence spent years as a big western movie star, and his life away from the cameras has come apart through drink, drugs and younger women. He rides off the set in the desert outside Moab, Utah, and takes to the road, hoping to find the child he may have fathered. He travels to Elko, Nevada, his hometown, to see his mother, whom he has not visited in thirty years. In Butte, Montana, he meets Doreen, a woman he left behind twenty years ago while making a movie there. Sky, a young woman, also comes to Butte, bringing her late mother's ashes back to the town she came from. Sutter, representing the company insuring the unfinished film, tracks Howard to bring him back to the set.
