Plot summary
In 1957, Mike Shea plans to leave his small Pennsylvania town for California with his girlfriend Brenda Carlucci, but she leaves him and he drives off alone. On the way he drowns getting a woman and her children out of a river, and wakes in Heaven, where his Aunt Lisa explains the rules. There he meets Annie Packert, a heavenly guide, and they fall in love. Annie, unlike Mike, has never lived on Earth, and she must leave Heaven for an assignment in a human body. The powers in Heaven, represented by Emmett Humbird, offer Mike thirty years back on Earth to find her, provided neither of them remembers the other.

- After a test screening of Made in Heaven, Rudolph said the screenwriters tried to have him fired; what followed was six months of battling, and he had to give up the film's darker elements to save the ending, which was then cut too.

Rudolph called the ending's last ten minutes his best work, describing a struggle between God (Debra Winger) and the Devil (Ellen Barkin) over Hutton's character after he is hit by a car, shot in one take in Atlanta as the sun went down.- Rudolph agreed to direct only if he could add a "dark edge" and make the audience pay for the romantic reward, and he insisted on no special effects, which the producers accepted.
