Plot summary
On a two-week spree across the South before their Air Force stint, brothers Chris and Wayne Dixon leave Chicago. After an earlier episode with the law, Chris faced prison until he was offered military duty instead, and Wayne had enlisted. Driving through Louisiana, they pick up hitchhiker Jenny Scott, who refuses to discuss her past. Their car breaks down, and the three pool their money so garage owner Hamp can patch it up in a Georgia town, where Sheriff Reed Morgan warns that staying could bring a vagrancy charge. Morgan is buying a shotgun for his son Luke before hunting season. Once the car runs again the three leave, but a second breakdown strands them near Morgan's land.
