Biography

Brion James was an American character actor who often played villains in horror and action films. Born in Redlands, California, he grew up in Beaumont, where his parents ran a movie theater, and he studied theater arts at San Diego State University before moving to New York to work in the theater. He began on screen in the mid 1970s with a small part in the television film The Kansas City Massacre, then appeared in Nickelodeon and Harry and Walter Go to New York. He played Leon Kowalski in Blade Runner (1982) and went on to parts in Southern Comfort (1981), 48 Hrs. (1982), Enemy Mine (1985), Red Heat (1988), Tango & Cash (1989), Another 48 Hrs. (1990), The Player (1992) and The Fifth Element (1997), where he was the amiable General Munro, a rare non-villainous role. He appeared in more than 100 films and died in 1999.
