Plot summary

Dr. Frank Sangster runs a dental practice and lives a settled, ordinary life. Susan Ivey arrives as a new patient needing a root canal and asks for something for the pain. She says she is allergic to the ibuprofen he offers, so he writes her a prescription for the painkiller Demerol, limited to five tablets. At the pharmacy she changes the amount to fifty. She turns up twelve hours late for the appointment, talks Frank into drinking with her and into bed, and leaves with his entire supply of narcotics. The next day a DEA agent comes to the office. A teenager has driven a car off a cliff after taking cocaine hydrochloride from a bottle traced to the dentist, and Frank promises to hand over the empty containers in two days.
