Plot summary
Ella grows up on her family's estate, and on her deathbed her mother asks her to hold to courage and kindness. Her father later brings home a second wife, the widowed Lady Tremaine, and Lady Tremaine's daughters, Drisella and Anastasia. When he leaves on business and dies abroad, Lady Tremaine dismisses the household servants, moves Ella to the attic and gives her the work. After the stepsisters find her asleep by the fireplace, face gray with cinders, they call her Cinderella. Out riding one day, Ella meets a young hunter who says his name is Kit and that he is an apprentice at the palace. A ball is announced there, and every eligible maiden in the land is invited to attend.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- While the crew photographed the actress in the wedding gown, she stood too close to an electric heater and the dress caught on fire; the top layer had to be redone because only one wedding dress was created, due to time and budget constraints.
- Emma Watson entered negotiations for the title role by February 2013 but a deal did not work out, and after being cast as Belle in the live-action Beauty and the Beast she explained that she refused because Cinderella's character did not resonate with her.
- Romanek supervised the project for fifteen months, envisioning a film that would be like "Barry Lyndon but with magic", but left in January 2013 over creative differences with Disney, as his vision was darker than the studio wanted.
- Eight versions of the Cinderella gown were designed, each with more than 270 yards of fabric and 10,000 crystals, and each dress took 18 tailors and 500 hours to make.
- Swarovski made five life-size crystal shoes for the film, though none were actually wearable, so the leather shoes James wore on set had to be digitally altered into crystal.
- Although the royal palace seen in the film is mainly computer-generated, it was modeled after a real building, the Zwinger in Dresden, Germany.
